Open Call for Historian-In-Residence for Children

Dublin City Council Culture Company in partnership with Dublin City Libraries are looking to appoint a Historian with a passion for history and bringing its stories to life with children. We are seeking to recruit a Historian-In-Residence for Children to work with us to build and enrich the access to history for children.
The Historian-in-Residence for Children is a year-long pilot project in partnership with Dublin City Libraries. This Residency will operate from Richmond Barracks (Inchicore, Dublin 8) and as part of the role, the Historian-In-Residence for Children will create and deliver a programme of workshops, activations, encounters and activity for 9-12 year olds in the locality which encourages access to history for the children, using innovative, creative and inspiring methods of engagement.

The Historian-In-Residence for Children project will:
- devise and deliver a programme of workshops, activations, encounters and range of activities including, but not limited to, schools programmes, after-school activities, weekend and summer history camps, walks or events.
- an essential element of the project is that the programme supports the creation and development of a young people’s history club/s who will go on to create their own history-based activities.
- animate history beyond the classroom so that it is challenging, engaging and fun for children, showing them that history is embedded in their local community and area.
- work within the values of participation, co-curation, active listening and passion for history, especially locally relevant history.
- collaborate across the different programmes and activities of Dublin City Council Culture Company (at Richmond Barracks, 14 Henrietta Street and other locations across the city), working closely with the wider team to develop ideas and projects.
This role will be supported by a working group, led by the Head of Project Development. The group has been established to support the Historian-in-Residence for Children and bring together learnings from the company’s existing activities such as the ongoing public consultation programme Tea & Chats.
Function and Role Specification
The Historian-in-Residence for Children will manage the engagement and project development of a children’s history programme using the children’s local area history as a starting point through conversation and co-creation with children, schools, youth groups and community clubs. The history programme should equip the children with knowledge and skills to research their own choice of historical interest.
The Historian-In-Residence for Children must have an enthusiasm for activity empowering the children’s own personal journey through history, capturing their curiosity, facilitating the learning of skills which allow them research, explore and discover their chosen areas of historical interest.
The Historian-in-Residence for Children will also have the opportunity to link with Dublin City Libraries well-established Historian-in-Residence programme.
The role will also require administrative and project management skills such as:
- To work independently and collaboratively as part of a small team, to be able to multitask, remain calm under pressure and meet tight deadlines and have a willingness to work flexibly (activities may take place at evenings and weekend);
- Be a clear and approachable communicator with excellent administrative and organisational skills and experience in Event planning and delivery.
- Manage and engage positively with the different stakeholders and partners to the project and to Dublin City Council Culture Company and Dublin City Libraries;
- Provide updates and reporting from the project as directed as per templates and guidelines provided;
- Work in line with best practice and Dublin City Council Culture Company Child Protection, Data Protection, and Health and safety policies and ensure compliance with all financial, contractual, legal procedures.

- A two-page submission on your ideas for the Historian-in-Residence Children project to animate history beyond the classroom so that it is challenging, engaging and fun for children, showing them that history is embedded in their local community and area.
- A one-page letter citing your specific skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the role specification and requirements.
