Kilmainham-Inchicore: The Routes and Networks of Dublin’s Southwestern Suburb
Kilmainham-Inchicore has been shaped over the centuries by the waterways and travel
routes that pass through it. Christian monks, Viking settlers, Norman knights and 18 th and
19 th century industrialists were drawn to the area by its position beside the Camac and the
Liffey and at Dublin’s western gateway. From the 18 th century, the natural features which
drew people to settle in the area over 1,000 years were supplemented by the development
of road, canal and rail networks linking Dublin to the west and south of Ireland,
transforming Kilmainham-Inchicore from a semi-rural district to Dublin’s main industrial
suburb. This talk by local historian Francis Thackaberry will look at the history of these
networks and the heritage they have left us.
