Tea & Chats with Mercy Secondary School’s Creative Council

As part of the development of new workshops for young people on our Culture Connects programme in Richmond Barracks, Emma, our Engagement Coordinator, has met with young people around the area to listen and learn what kind of things they are interested in.

Emma has met with young people from community groups, youth groups and schools, including the Creative Council from Mercy Secondary School Inchicore.

The Creative Council is made up of a representative of students from each year group across the school who make decisions on creativity in their school. They visited us for a Tea & Chats workshop in Richmond Barracks, and engaged in an open conversation where we listened and learned about what matters to them.

This Tea & Chats workshop included a creative activity, led by illustrator Kate Escolin and organised by Culture Connects coordinator Laura Keegan (both pictured above with the students). The students got to make their own zines which communicated things that they like, so we could learn from them about what’s important to them. They showed amazing creativity and imagination, and we were delighted to get to know them better.

Some of the students mentioned an interest in dancing, so as a follow up, we organised two dance workshops in Mercy Secondary School with Mia and Philippa, our dance artists in residence. The students had some great fun dancing and shared their own ideas to build their own choreography, bringing out their creativity and skills.

One student who participated told us “I liked best the people, they were really nice, and I liked the ideas.”

We hope to keep developing our connections with Mercy Secondary School next year and to work together to find interesting ways to introduce the students to new cultural experiences.

If you are part of a group for young people and would like to take part in a Tea & Chats workshop or find out more, we would love to hear from you!

About Tea & Chats

We want to listen, explore and learn about what’s important to the people of Dublin, to understand what matters to them.

Tea & Chats is an ongoing programme of informal and open conversations over a cup of tea with people about what matters to them. By listening and connecting, we can build relationships, collaborate and suggest ways for people to explore the city’s culture.

Find out more about Tea & Chats on the Dublin City Council Culture Company's website.
