Join us for a weekly themed craft session for children and their grown ups. Led by Artist in Residence Lisa O’Connor, each week we will explore new materials and get creative together. Each workshop will have different activities for both children and adults to take part in together. This includes a messy play activity, so wearing less-loved clothes is advised!
Fridays 2 to 30 October, 3.30 pm; duration 1 hour

Exploring Nature Through Art (adults and ages 15+)
Explore the beauty of nature through art. Join artist and illustrator Enagh Farrell to learn how to draw some of the native Irish plants growing in the local area. You will explore basic drawing and watercolour techniques and find out more about the important part these plants play in supporting local biodiversity. Each week will be about learning to draw a different plant so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. No previous experience is needed.
Tuesdays 6 to 20 October, 11 am, duration 2 hours
Introduction to Ceramics (adults and ages 15+)
Try your hand at ceramics and learn some of the basic techniques of this artform. Led by artist and designer Liz Walsh, each week will focus on making a different object, including a plant pot, a pot holder and a mug. You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like.
Wednesdays 14 to 28 October, 6 pm; duration 2 hours
Poetry Yoga (adults and ages 15+)
Stretch your body and your creativity. Join Artist in Residence Trudie Gorman for Poetry Yoga. Try out gentle poses, accompanied by original poetry to guide you deeper into each pose and allow space for reflection. You will also have the opportunity to do some writing of your own with Trudie guiding you through poetry and journaling prompts in response to your experiences in the session. This workshop is suitable for beginners in both yoga and writing!
Wednesday 14 October, 6.30 pm; duration 90 minutes

Saturday Craft Social (adults and ages 8+)
Try out textile-based crafts and work on your own projects. Facilitated by Artist in Residence Niki Collier, this informal craft session is aimed at those who want to get together, make things and be creative. Whether you are trying to finish an old project, start a new one or just want to try out something new, this is for you. All levels of experience are welcome.
Saturday 17 October, 10.30 am; duration 3 hours
Architecture workshop: Reimagining Play at Richmond Barracks (all ages)
Explore architecture and urban planning through art, creativity, and simple design techniques. Join architect Muhammad Achour for an interactive workshop where you can design your own play space. Through creative activities and simple architectural techniques, you will be introduced to the ways architects and planners think about public spaces.
This free workshop is presented by Irish Architecture Foundation as part of Open House Dublin (Junior Program).
Saturday 10 October, 11 am; duration 2 hours
Writers Circle (adults and ages 15+)
The Writers Circle is for anyone who has taken part in previous creative writing workshops in the Culture Connects programme. Facilitated by Artist in Residence Trudie Gorman, the Writers Circle is a monthly meet-up that encourages people to continue writing and sharing their work. Get feedback and encouragement for your writing and connect with others through a shared interest.

Make a Jam Jar Terrarium Morning Workshop (adults and ages 6+)
A terrarium is a glass container that works a little bit like a tiny greenhouse, keeping your plants moist, warm and protected. Join facilitator Gobnait Ní Néill to create your very own miniature terrarium using a jam jar. Learn about how to build up the right layers for drainage, soil and decoration. If you have a favourite tiny toy, ornament, pebble or stick bring it along to add to your terrarium. Finished terrariums will need to be carried home carefully, so be sure to plan your journey home as well.

Make Native Irish Species Shadow Puppets and Lanterns (adults and ages 6+)
Make your own hand-made shadow puppets and lanterns inspired by our native species. Join Eco-Gardener Polly Rowley-Sams for a workshop exploring native Irish animals. Learn about what makes a species native, how to identify native Irish animals, and why having lots of different native species is important. Working with text, images and recycled materials you will create your own hand-made shadow puppets and practice the art of shadow puppeteering.

How do historians and archaeologists find out about the lives of children in the past? Join Dublin's Historian in Residence for Children Lorcan McEvoy to explore hundreds of years of history through objects. Look at different objects to see what they tell us about how children lived throughout history and the kind of games they played, and create objects of your own.

Children's History Workshop: Halloween History (ages 6 to 12)
Join Dublin's Historian in Residence for Children Lorcan McEvoy to explore the history of Halloween. Trace Halloween's roots back to the ancient festival of Samhain, find out about the traditions and games associated with this time of year, and play some of these traditional games yourself. We encourage you to come in a Halloween costume, or dressed as a notable figure from history.

Online Book Club: Said the Dead by Doireann Ní Ghríofa (adults and ages 15+)
The Culture Connects online book club meets via Zoom on the last Thursday of the month. We talk about the month’s book, swap book recommendations and have a chat. Books we read and discuss together include both fiction and non-fiction by Irish and international authors.

We want to open up ways for people to experiment with all kinds of culture. Culture Connects is our year-round programme that invites people in Dublin to try out new things. We offer ways for people to make and create together, to share ideas and connect through culture and conversation.
