Bookings that will open on Wednesday 5 August at 10 am


Talk at the Mess: The Fenian Empire (all ages)

Talks at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present. 

Join Historian Patrick J. Mahoney for this talk about the Fenian movement. Discover the untold story of how Fenianism intersected with race, colonialism, and internationalist solidarity across North America and the Caribbean at a time of intense political turmoil.

Dance Delights (adults and ages 15+)

Try out different dance styles. Join Artists in Residence Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro and discover new ways to move your body to music. No prior experience of dance is needed and you can move at your own pace. You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Dance on Film - a film screening (all ages)

Discover dance through film. Selected by Artists in Residence Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro, join us to watch inspiring dance on film and discuss it over a cup of tea.

Little Gardeners (ages 1 to 5)

Little Gardeners is a workshop for babies, toddlers and young children aged 5 and under and their parent or carer. Let’s explore the Richmond Barracks garden and its biodiversity together!  Join Eco-Gardener Polly Rowley-Sams to learn about different ways to encourage biodiversity and take part in some gardening in an environmentally-aware way. Children will have a chance to play and get their hands dirty in the Richmond Barracks garden and you can pick up some eco-gardening tips.

Introduction to Drawing with Charcoal (adults and ages 15+)

Charcoal is a versatile drawing material that can be used to make a variety of marks and tones. Join Artist in Residence Paula Garcia Ibanez to explore the basics of drawing with charcoal. No previous experience of drawing is needed. Each workshop will explore different techniques and subject matter so you can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Writing Our Ancestry (adults and ages 15+)

What do we inherit - in stories, in memory, in the body? What do we choose to carry forward? Join Artist in Residence Trudie Gorman for a series of creative writing workshops exploring ancestry in its many forms: writing to, from and about those who came before us - and those who will come after. These workshops are suitable for beginners or more experienced writers. The workshops will include an optional free visit to the National Library of Ireland.

Ukulele for Beginners (adults and ages 15+)

The ukulele is a great starter instrument for anyone who wants to try playing music for the first time. Led by Artist in Residence Shane McGrath, each week you will learn some new chords and try out playing a few tunes. You don't need any previous experience to take part. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own.

Ukulele for Improvers (adults and ages 15+)

Ukulele for Improvers is for people who have already started playing the ukulele and want to continue to learn. Led by Artist in Residence Shane McGrath, each week you will learn some new chords and try out playing a few tunes. 

You will need some experience of basic ukulele playing to take part. If you find this workshop too hard you are welcome to join the beginners session that takes place at 6 pm. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own.

Sing for Fun: Irish Folk Songs (adults and ages 15+)

Ceiliúraigí oidhreacht cheoil na hÉireann agus bainigí triail as an amhránaíocht mar chuid de ghrúpa. Bígí linn leis an Ealaíontóir Cónaithe Michael McCartan chun amhráin thraidisiúnta Éireannacha ó thréimhsí éagsúla a fhoghlaim agus a chanadh. Canfaimid amhráin i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla araon.

Celebrate Ireland's musical heritage and try out singing as part of a group. Join Artist in Residence Michael McCartan to learn to sing Irish folk songs from different eras. We will sing songs in both Irish and English. You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like. No singing experience is needed, just an interest in taking part.

Sketchbook Club (ages 15 to 23)

Sketchbook Club is an art club for young people to draw and make art hosted by Artist in Residence Kate Escolin. Everyone is welcome, whether you are an experienced artist or just starting out. This will be a creative space where mistakes are welcomed and exploration is encouraged!

All art materials are provided but feel free to bring your own sketchbook. You can book to come to one workshop or as many as you like.

Bookings that will open on Wednesday 19 August at 10 am

Saturday Craft Social (adults and ages 8+)

Try out textile-based crafts and work on your own projects. Facilitated by Artist in Residence Niki Collier, this informal craft session is aimed at those who want to get together, make things and be creative. Whether you are trying to finish an old project, start a new one or just want to try out something new, this is for you. All levels of experience are welcome.

Takes place on Saturday 19 September, 10.30 am; duration 3 hours

 

Writers Circle (adults and ages 15+)

The Writers Circle is for anyone who has taken part in previous creative writing workshops in the Culture Connects programme. Facilitated by Artist in Residence Trudie Gorman, the Writers Circle is a monthly meet-up that encourages people to continue writing and sharing their work. Get feedback and encouragement for your writing and connect with others through a shared interest.

Online Book Club: There are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak (adults and ages 15+)

The Culture Connects online book club meets via Zoom on the last Thursday of the month. We talk about the month’s book, swap book recommendations and have a chat. Books we read and discuss together include both fiction and non-fiction by Irish and international authors.

Dublin Festival of History (26 September to 11 October)

Topics will include the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement, Eva Gore-Booth, and there will also be a writing workshop.

Takes place on various dates to be announced.  


Children's History Workshop: Dublin's History in Maps (ages 7 to 12)

Join Dublin's Historian in Residence for Children Lorcan McEvoy to explore hundreds of years of Dublin's history through maps. Look at different maps from the past and present, to see how the city has grown and changed, and make your own map of Dublin. Presented as part of Dublin Festival of History.
