Every Saturday from June to September 2026 we have fantastic local tours that highlight the area’s lesser known history.

Both tours depart from Richmond Barracks and last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

Goldenbridge Cemetery Tour, Saturdays at 12 pm

Goldenbridge Cemetery is Ireland’s first garden cemetery and was founded by ‘The Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell almost 200 years ago.


Visitors will be guided through this unspoilt cemetery, an oasis of calm and tranquility in Inchicore. Learn about the cemetery’s unique history, including the vaults, the armed guards, the Cuban bloodhounds, the body snatchers and the people buried in the historically significant and interesting graves within its walls.

Richmond Barracks to Kilmainham Gaol, Saturdays at 2 pm

Walk in the footsteps of the 1916 leaders as they went to their deaths in Kilmainham Gaol following a cursory court-martial at Richmond Barracks. Along the way, you will learn about the police and military riot on Emmet Road during the 1913 Lockout and how six young lads from Inchicore fought for democracy in the Spanish Civil War. You will hear of local poets and poetry, sporting heroes, art and architecture, and other treasures hidden in plain sight. Please note, this tour does not include a visit inside Kilmainham Gaol.

Routes and terrain

The Goldenbridge Cemetery tour begins and ends outside the main gates to the Cemetery. Please note, the tour takes place on uneven terrain and grassy paths and we ask all visitors to wear suitable footwear and please follow the guides’ instructions and directions at all times. 

The Richmond Barracks to Kilmainham Gaol tour begins at Richmond Barracks and ends at Inchicore Road, opposite Kilmainham Gaol. The tour will follow pathways throughout, and cross roads using pedestrian crossings where possible.  

Parking

There are two disabled parking bays outside the entrance to Richmond Barracks.

Toilets

There is an accessible bathroom available for visitors with impaired mobility. 

Assistance dogs

Guide and assistance dogs are welcome at Richmond Barracks and on walking tours.

Richmond Barracks is located off Bulfin Road, on the corner of Emmet Road (R810), and behind St. Michael’s Church. It faces a building site, previously St. Michael’s Estate.
