Recording - The Killing of Sean Doyle on Kilmashogue Mountain 1920

Sean Doyle of Emmet Road Inchicore was just 15 when he took part in the Easter Rebellion as a courier attached to the South Dublin Union garrison. After the surrender he was one of several boys who were released from Richmond Barracks on account of his young age. Doyle was an apprentice fitter at the Inchicore works when he was shot dead on the slopes of Kilmashogue mountain in late 1920. He was the first rebel to be killed by Auxiliaries in Ireland.

Fergus Whelan tells the story of how when the Auxies raided Kilmashogue and killed Sean Doyle they missed a bigger prize as almost the entire Dublin Command Staff of the IRA concealed in Jack Courtney's bomb factory escaped unscathed.
