Talk at the Mess: The Catalpa Rescue of 1876 (all ages)

Talks at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present.

Join Frank MacGabhann, a retired lawyer with family connections to the story of the Fenian movement, to hear the story of the Catalpa Rescue.

In 1876 the Clan na Gael, the revolutionary Fenian movement in exile in America, carried out a bold rescue to free six political prisoners in Western Australia. The prisoners had been excluded from the amnesty that freed other Fenian prisoners because they were British soldiers who had taken the Fenian oath. The group included former Richmond Barracks soldier Robert Cranston.
